This is a recast of the original coin from the Platrides Family Collection. This is the infamous Judas Shekel or Tyre Shekel Tetradrachm. It is widely believed that Judas Iscariot was paid in 30 such Shekels in order to betray Jesus Christ. So this is truly a Biblical Coin. After the Roman Empire closed the mint in Tyre, the Roman authorities allowed the Jewish rabbanim to continue minting Tyrian shekels in Palestine. The front side of this coin bears an Eagle and the Greek inscription "ΤΥΡΟΥ ΙΕΡΑΣ ΚΑΙ ΑΣΥΛΟΥ" which roughly translates to: "Of Tyre the holy city and city of Refuge". The reverse of the coin features the Laurel Wreathed Head of the Phoenician god Melqart or Baal, accepted as the Olympian Hercules by the Greeks, reflecting his role in the Tyrian games and the ancient Olympic Games.
